Storyline:
Mrs. America evokes the genesis of American feminism by exploring the figure of a conservative activist played by Cate Blanchett.
We are in the United States in the 1970s. Phyllis Schlafly is a conservative, homophobic and anti-abortion activist who fights to prevent the ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment. Facing it, the feminist movement is organized with Gloria Steinem, Bella Abzug or Shirley Chisholm at its head. The two camps confront each other and must deal with their many internal dysfunctions.
Mrs. America takes the side of telling feminism from the point of view of its adversaries. The series, created by Dahvi Waller and broadcast on Hulu, focuses on one of the fiercest opponents of ERA while evoking the beginnings of the American feminist movement by focusing on its front figures. This is an opportunity to discover in particular the journey of Shirley Chisholm, the first black woman to run for president in 1972, and to better understand the obstacles that stood in front of her.
The series understood that the best placed to speak about feminism were the main concerned, therefore women. Mrs. America has a 5 star cast that does the job wonderfully. Cate Blanchett is formidable in the role of Phyllis Schlafly just like Sarah Paulson who accompanies him in his fight by interpreting Alice. We could not have dreamed better than Rose Byrne, an actress unfairly underestimated, to put herself in the shoes of Gloria Steinem or Uzo Aduba to move us in Shirley Chisholm.
